A long time ago, there was a gigantic tree, the ash Yggdrasil. The three roots of the ash descended to three different sources. In one that was icy cold was the dragon Nidhögg gnawing continuously on the root of the tree. The second source was Mimer's well, with water filled with wisdom and knowledge. The third source was Urdarbrunnen. Beside it lived the three Norns Urd, Verdandi and Guilt, the spun the life thread of people and determined its length. Oden sacrificed one eye in Mimer's well for a drink of the water of wisdom. To the well, the gods rode across the bridge Bifrost, which shimmered in the colors of the rainbow. The tissue also shows Loke, who, after chopping off Mimer's head, transformed himself into a salmon, who swam away in the stream Sökvabäkk. Lokes daughter Hel, the ruler of the underworld is there, as is the Midgård Serpent, which in the oceans winds around Midgård, the world of the people. Outside Hels's black fence are the black elves, dwarves and skilled blacksmiths. Their anvil and hammer are there, as well as Ask and Embla, the first people and the squirrel Ratatosk, constantly running messenger between the roots and the top of Yggdrasil.
