Sailboat on the Göta Canal. One of Sweden´s longest and most popular attractions The part of the canal that is situated in Östergötland starts in Motala and ends in Mem outside Söderköping. The locks in Berg are one of the canal’s top attractions and one of Sweden’s most spectacular constructions. Here, seven interlinked locks form a series of ‘steps’ that raise or lower boats 28.8 metres.
Castle. There are several castles & manors in Östergötland
Vadstena Abbey, is a monastery of nuns within the Bridgettine Order. It was active from 1346 until 1595 and has been active since 1963, regaining status as an autonomous abbey in 1991. The abbey started on one of the farms donated to it by the king, but the town of Vadstena grew up around it. It was the motherhouse of the Bridgettine Order from 1346 to 1595.
Bobbin, is a rich and beautiful craft with strong historical roots in Östergötland
Bobbbin lace. The small town of Vadstena became the city in Sweden where the art of knotting Vadstenaspets was developed.
Nuns. There are two Catholic nunneries in Östergötland: the Sisters of Birgit in Vadstena and the Daughters of Mary at Omberg
